What settings to use for gold (XAUUSD)

It is the question that comes up most in the groups: «can somebody send me a set that works for gold?».

The honest answer is that a set that works for someone else need not work for you, and not because gold is mysterious: because half of those settings depend on your balance, your broker and the channel you follow. Copying a stranger's numbers is copying their account.

What can be done is explain what each thing decides, so you can set it yourself in five minutes.

What makes gold different

It moves a lot, and fast. A normal stop on a gold signal is 10 to 15 dollars of travel. On a currency pair that would be enormous; here it is an ordinary Tuesday.

Every broker writes it differently. XAUUSD, GOLD, XAUUSDm, XAUUSD.r. The first thing is making sure the copier knows which one is yours.

And every broker quotes it differently. Some with two decimals, some with three. That matters more than it looks: if you set «secure after 30 pips», check that it means 3.00 dollars of travel and not 0.30.

The contract is 100 ounces. With 0.01 lots, every dollar gold moves is a dollar in your account. It is the most useful sum you can learn: a 12 $ stop with 0.01 lots is a 12 $ loss.

The four real decisions

1. How much you risk per trade

Do not pick a lot size: pick a percentage of your account, and let the lot come out of that. Between 1 % and 2 % per trade is what almost everybody with experience recommends.

Do the sum before you start, because gold makes it expensive: on a 300 $ account, 1 % is 3 $, and a 12 $ stop needs 0.0025 lots. Your broker will not open less than 0.01. Which means that on that account you cannot risk 1 %: you risk 4 % whether you like it or not.

If that is you, there are three ways out and none is magic: a bigger account, a channel with tighter stops, or accepting that you risk more than you wanted.

2. Which target you use

Gold channels usually post three: a near one, a middle one and a far one.

  • The first one only pays sooner and more often, and leaves you out when the move was big.
  • The last one only pays more when the price keeps going, and gives back many trades that were winning.
  • Split, part at each, is the middle ground — but it needs a lot size that can be divided, and 0.01 cannot.

With the minimum lot the decision is just one: near or far. There is no splitting it.

3. What happens when it is winning

This is where almost everything is decided, and it is what most people leave switched off without realising.

Securing: when the trade moves as far as you say, the stop goes to your entry and from there you cannot lose. Leave it slightly above the entry, not right on it, or the spread and the commission eat the little you gained.

Moving the stop up with each target: on passing the second, the stop goes to the first. That is what turns a trade that reversed into a small gain instead of a zero.

And a warning: the channel does not do this, your settings do. The channel posting «move to break even» moves nothing if you have that option switched off.

4. When you do not want to trade

Gold goes wild on United States news and in the small hours. Two limits worth more than any fine tuning: a maximum daily loss that pauses everything, and hours outside which nothing opens.

What I would not do

Copy the lot size the channel posts. That is their account's risk.

Widen the stop by hand «so it does not take me out». That does not reduce risk, it multiplies it.

Look for the perfect set before starting. It does not exist, and while you look for it you have no numbers of your own.

How you actually find out

Put the channel on watch without trading for a week or two. A decent copier works out the order it would have opened with your rules and your broker's real prices, and follows it to the end without opening anything.

After a fortnight you have something no borrowed set gives you: your own numbers with that channel. From there you know whether to raise or lower the risk, and whether the near target suited you better than the far one.

Copying signals can lose money, and gold moves fast. No set avoids that. The only thing you decide is how much you are willing to lose when it goes wrong.

Where this is set

In Norte Copier each of the four decisions is a screen in plain words, not a file a stranger sends you. And shadow mode is exactly the above: it watches the channel with your rules before you risk a dollar.
